Get to know Tierra del Fuego through the movies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Who hasn't been motivated to travel somewhere after watching a film?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the last few years Tierra del Fuego has been chosen for national and international films and advertisements. Without travelling long distances you can find mountains, glaciers, peat bogs, forests, steppes or the Atlantic coast. And the landscapes of the End of the World have taken more than one's breath away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some recommendations that you can note down to see before or after your trip:<\/p>\n\n\n\n


THE REBORN (2015)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also known as The Revenant<\/em>directed by Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1arritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is inspired by a historical character named Hugh Glass, an early 19th century explorer and hunter. Throughout the film, the protagonist tries to survive, after being attacked by a bear, to take revenge on a mercenary who abandoned him while he was dying in the harsh winter by the Missouri River.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the film was shot in different locations in Canada and the United States, due to the lack of snow accumulation in those places, they decided to move the production and finish the film in Ushuaia. So for three weeks during the winter of 2015 they filmed the last 15 minutes of the film on the Olivia River at the foot of the RN 3 on the outskirts of Ushuaia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE WOLF'S LAIR (2019)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another film shot during the winter. This is a national production starring Gast\u00f3n Pauls, Victor Laplace and Jos\u00e9 Luis Gioia. It is about a character who lives far from the city, lost in the forest, and who one day finds an injured person and decides to take him in until he recovers. These two men, one from the city and the other from the mountains, strike up a friendship. However, the calm of the place is interrupted by a landowner who wants to buy the land where Toco lives and raises his dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This film was shot in one of the winter resorts near Ushuaia. In the film you can see the characters riding on sledges pulled by dogs as a form of transport. Nowadays they are used for sledging in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE LEGEND OF THE CRAB KING (2022)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is an Italian-Argentine production filmed last year in different locations in Tierra del Fuego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between glasses of wine, a group of old hunters recall the 19th century legend of Luciano: a madman, a vigilante and a bastard who, because he has a forbidden love and rebels against authority, is exiled to the end of the world. When he arrives, he embarks on a journey through Tierra del Fuego motivated to find a treasure where he is trapped by his own madness and greed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film shows different places on the island such as Cape San Pablo, Estancia T\u00fanel, the Tierra Mayor Valley and the Turquoise Lagoon. The legend is very similar to many explorers who arrived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century thirsty for gold and very few managed to fill up with money. Others were lost in greed, ambition and madness like the protagonist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE JOURNEY (1992)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This film is directed by Pino Solanas and stars Walter Quiroz and the singer Fito Paez who dedicates a song to the city of Ushuaia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story is about a young student in the early 1990s who leaves his village in the south and embarks on an inner journey to discover his identity and a journey across the country in search of his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will find a small Ushuaia of the 90's and an important fact: the school where Fito Paez is a student is the old original prison which nowadays is the Maritime and Prison Museum. If you see it you will be able to compare how much the city has changed and also which places you recognise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HALMONI (2018)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a documentary and tells the story of many immigrants who came to the End of the World and put down their roots in this land. Halmoni means \"grandmother\" in Korean and is a beautiful tribute to Jo Ok Sim by her grandson. In it he tells the story of the arrival of his grandmother and grandfather to Ushuaia in 1974, the first Koreans on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also a reflection on Korean identity and culture, but especially on the value of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This documentary is a beautiful tale of love for the land that welcomed them and nostalgia for the place they left. The story, like many expatriates, of feeling neither of one place nor the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CASTORES The Invasion of the End of the World (2015)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, I recommend this documentary about the most known exotic species of Tierra del Fuego. Many tourists who come here are interested in learning about these animals. Although they look like cute rodents, they alter the dynamics of the forest by logging and building dams. What happened is that about 20 pairs were introduced in the 1940s for the fur industry. As the climate was not similar to Canada, where they were native, this project failed and they were released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This film tells them everything, how they arrived, what impact they have on the ecosystem, whether any of the animal's resources are used in Tierra del Fuego, the attempts to eradicate them and many other things that will help them understand the negative impact they have on the Fuegian forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
