Moreover, at this latitude there is no other continent or island. That is to say, if you sail east of Tierra del Fuego and sail around the globe, the only thing you will find is the west coast of the Fuegian archipelago.

These two bodies of water that embrace the islands regulate the temperature. If we compare a town at latitude 54, as Ushuaia is located, but in the Northern Hemisphere, those places in the middle of Siberia or Canada will have a greater thermal amplitude. That is to say, warmer summers and harsher winters. In our city the average temperature in the month of July is 1°C and the extreme minimum is -12°C.

Another factor that influences the temperature of a place is the altitude above sea level. A city at 1,000 metres above sea level will have a more marked difference between day and night temperatures. In this case, Ushuaia is located on the sea coast (Beagle Channel) and the ski slopes are no higher than 600 metres above sea level.

In addition, Tierra del Fuego is surrounded by two cold sea currents from Antarctica. The difference between Ushuaia and other European port cities at the same latitude is that the latter receive the warm current from the Caribbean during the summer.

Another unique feature of this destination is the orientation of the Andes mountain range, which plays an important role in the climate of the region. While in the rest of the continent the mountains run from north to south, here they are oriented from west to east, Ushuaia being located on the other side of the mountain range. So the cold winds, which originate in Antarctica, and the humid winds from the Pacific, collide with the mountains and force them to rise. As they do so, they cool down and much of the vapour falls as rain or snow.

In conclusion, why will you find the best snow in Ushuaia?

- One thing to bear in mind is that snow always falls at 0°C, no more and no less, so if the winter temperature in our city averages 1°C there is a greater chance of snow.

- The few hours of sunshine in winter, the altitude, the humid wind and the cold sea currents of the Antarctic mean that the snow is preserved for a longer period of time. In addition, the winter resorts in Tierra del Fuego are located on the shady slopes of the mountains for the same reason. That is why you can come to enjoy the snow from June to the beginning of October.

- Finally, the big difference with other winter tourist destinations in the country is that Ushuaia is the only Argentine city behind the Andes. That was the main factor why in the winter of 2020 there was not enough snow in other destinations in the country but there was here.

So, when you plan your next winter holidays, you already know that at the End of the World you will find more snow, for longer and it won't necessarily be colder than in other parts of Argentina.

Para poder entender esto primero debo contarte sobre algunas características que inciden en el clima del lugar.
