The best museums to visit in Ushuaia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To know Ushuaia, in addition to excursions and sightseeing tours of the places considered the most beautiful in Argentina, such as knowing the Fuegian Lakes<\/a> or sailing the southernmost waters, you have to get to know its culture, its history and the things that conditioned the formation of the city as we know it today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These three aspects can be found in the Museums of Ushuaia, which bring together a large part of the history of Tierra del Fuego. Museum of the End of the World<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Museum has a building at 173 Maip\u00fa Avenue and for more than 70 years belonged to the Banco de la Naci\u00f3n Argentina. It was not until the nineties that it became the Museum of the End of the World. The tour through its rooms shows the customs of the first inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego and their activities, up to the first settlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a room dedicated to the End of the World Prison and the activities carried out inside it, and another one dedicated to the local fauna with a large number of regional birds. Ushuaia has a diverse regional fauna that can be appreciated both in the Tierra del Fuego National Park<\/a> as in the Navigation in the Beagle Channel<\/a> where you pass Bird Island and Wolf Island, typical walks in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, the museum has a second building at Maip\u00fa 465, the former Governor's residence and Government House.

Maritime and Presidio Museum<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Presidio Museum is located in Yaganes and Gobernador Paz, and is open to the public all year round from 9am to 8pm in summer and from March to December from 10am to 8pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibits that can be seen there tell nothing more and nothing less than the history of the prison of Ushuaia, since the museum is the former prison of the End of the World. In the pavilions of the former prison of Ushuaia you will find the Maritime Museum, the Antarctic Museum and the Museum of Marine Art.
The museum provides an insight into the life of the inmates and their daily activities. You can see the cells where they spent their days, the work they did, the punishments they received for misbehaviour and also the letters they wrote to their loved ones. The inmates carried out important works such as buildings and bridges that changed the city at that time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several famous prisoners spent their sentences in the prison museum, such as Cayetano Santos Godino, the \u201clittle eared boy\u201d, who spent a large part of his life in the prison because of his crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The well-behaved prisoners did work outside the prison, searching for wood and materials by travelling by train, in the now touristic End of the World Train<\/a>, The most dangerous or misbehaved spent their day in a prison that could only be escaped by sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is advisable to spend at least 1 hour in the Presidio Museum as it is a very special place that tells the origins of the city and the story of the people who spent their lives there.

Ushuaia Maritime Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Maritime Museum exhibits remains of shipwrecks that occurred in the area, in Antarctica, Cape Horn, the Falkland Islands and Georgias, since it is a place with a great maritime presence. It also shows the naval constructions from centuries ago, exhibited with scale models and the evolution marked by time and the advances in the subject. The models are very well made, bringing realism to what we see. It also tells the story of the naval evolution since the first explorers in Tierra del Fuego. In order to make the tour complete and with the help of different organisms, a maritime art library was created.\u00a0

Antarctic Museum <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In the 19th century, several expeditions began to the Antarctic continent, which was little explored, with very little cartography and, of course, a great deal of risk. The always complex climatic conditions made it difficult to explore the great white continent. Progress was made, which can be seen in the Antarctic Museum, in its collection of models, in the stories and accounts of the first explorers such as Amundsen, Scott, Shackleton and Nordenskjold, who were its protagonists, and in the expeditions to a continent with extreme conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museum of Marine Art<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This part of the museum displays incredible works by artists who have contributed to marine art since the 19th century, from Tierra del Fuego, but also from other parts of the country and internationally. Audio guides are available in several languages so that tourists from all over the world can access the information.

The Gallery offers a tour through the history of Ushuaia represented by life-size scenes and human figures. The gallery gives an account of the life of the first settlers Y\u00e1manas, Selknam and Haush, the size and the realistic recreation of the scene is what makes the passage through the gallery an interesting walk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
