If you are looking for an experience that combines the majesty of the mountains, the mysticism of the sub-Antarctic forest and the immensity of the Patagonian water mirrors, our excursion to Lakes Escondido and Fagnano is the ideal option. This tour is much more than a walk; it is an epic journey that allows you to cross the Andes Mountains and discover the heart of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego.
The Beginning of the Journey: Peat Valleys and Towering Mountains
The adventure starts promptly at 9:00 amWe leave the city heading east, taking the mythical Ushuaia road. We leave the city heading east, taking the mythical National Route N° 3The backbone that connects civilisation with the wilderness.
As soon as we leave the urban fabric behind, the landscape is transformed. As we skirt the base of the Mount OliviaOne of the most iconic and challenging peaks for local climbers, the horizon expands. Before us opens the imposing Sierra AlvearIts snowy slopes contrast with the deep green of the valleys. At its foot, a unique ecosystem spreads out: a gigantic peat valley known as the Carbajal Valley. This landscape, which looks like something out of a film, changes its name as we go along, becoming the valleys of Tierra Mayor y Las CotorrasThe ski resorts are the nerve centres of winter activities and cross-country skiing.
The Ascent of the Garibaldi Pass: An Unparalleled View
As we move on, the road leads us to a place where we can see the Hunger RanchThis is the point where the actual ascent to the mountain range begins. The route winds through forests of lenga and ñire trees until it reaches the 430 metres above sea level. Here, in the famous Garibaldi PassWe will stop for one of the most exciting moments of the tour.
From the viewpoint of the Garibaldi Pass, you will enjoy an unparalleled panoramic view. To the north, the Hidden LakeA turquoise jewel enclosed by mountains. Beyond, on the horizon, you can glimpse the vastness of the Lake Fagnanoone of the largest lakes in South America. It is the perfect place to capture photographs that reflect the true scale of Patagonia.
Exploring the Heart of the Island: Lakes and Sawmills
We continue our descent to the shores of Lago Escondido to appreciate its calmness from another angle, and then we continue our journey towards the Lake Fagnano (or Khami Lake, in the native language). At this point we make a technical stop to contemplate the force of nature; this lake has the particularity of being located on the Magellan fault, which gives it a unique energy and geography.
As we leave the lake behind us, the landscape changes again. We enter the area of the ancient sawmillswhere the timber industry left its historical mark. Here, the lenga trees form a dense, even forest of seemingly endless scenic beauty.
Local Gastronomy and Return
On the way back to the city of Ushuaia, we will make a strategic stop at a country restaurant on the road. Here you will have the opportunity to enjoy a typical lunch (such as the famous Fuegian lamb) in a privileged natural environment, surrounded by mountains and fresh air.
What to bring? Recommendations for your excursion
The weather in Tierra del Fuego is known for its unpredictability; it is common to experience "the four seasons in one day". To enjoy it to the fullest, we recommend you:
- Layered clothing ("Onion" system): A thermal first layer, an intermediate coat (fleece or wool) and a waterproof/windproof jacket as an outer layer.
- Appropriate footwear: Trekking shoes or sports shoes with good grip, as we will be walking on natural terrain that may be wet.
- Sun protection: Even if it's cloudy, UV radiation at these latitudes is high. Don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses.
- Camera and Batteries: Cold weather can drain mobile phone batteries faster than normal. Bring your camera and an external battery if possible.
- Water and snacks: Although we stop for lunch, it is always advisable to bring a bottle of water for the journey.
