About the excursion

DAY 1 National Park + Train to the End of the World

The activity starts from your accommodation between 7/8 am. We will travel the first 8km and arrive at the station of the Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino, the TRAIN AT THE END OF THE WORLD. After forty years without operating, in 1994 the Train at the End of the World resumed part of the old route of the prisoners' train, which departed from the prison of Ushuaia, located in the centre of the city, towards the slope of Mount Susana with the aim of obtaining materials (wood and stone) for the construction of the train.

On board the train you will be able to listen to the history of the prisoners who used to come daily to cut wood in this area, and enjoy the magnificent landscapes, composed by the zigzagging Pipo River, La Macarena waterfall, the cemetery of trees and the majestic lenga forest. In this way you will visit an inaccessible part of the Tierra del Fuego National Park, where you will be able to enjoy this experience on board of a vintage railway, with its steam locomotives and elegant cars that have large windows and an individual audio system, which offers the possibility of listening to the history in 7 different languages, in order to not only appreciate the surrounding nature, but also to know a very important part of the history of Ushuaia.

Once we reach the end of our journey (National Park Station) we will continue into the Tierra del Fuego National Park (an area reserved for the protection of the sub-Antarctic forest, native flora and fauna). We will visit Ensenada Bay, Lake Acigami (glacial lake of more than 5 square kilometres), the Alakush Interpretation Centre and then continue towards Lapataia Bay, end of the Pan-American Route N° 3. From there, once we have crossed the footbridges, we will start our return to the city of Ushuaia.

Beagle Channel Navigation

Back in the city of Ushuaia, you will have approximately 1 hour for lunch on your own, before starting the second part of the tour. The Beagle Channel Navigation: This experience starts at 2:30 pm at the ticket office of the local tourist port. We will sail across Ushuaia Bay towards the Beagle Channel, where our first destination will be the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse (The Illuminators, a term used in France), an authentic Fuegian symbol. Then we will head towards the Bridges Archipelago and approaching the Isla de los Lobos we will be able to observe sea lions of one and two fur seals. Continuing our trip towards the Island of the Birds, we will sail around it and we will be able to appreciate the Fuegian avifauna: Skuas, Black-browed Albatrosses, Steamer Ducks, Geese, Cooking Gulls, Grey Gulls, Imperial and Royal Cormorants. Following the tour we will arrive at Karelo Island, where passengers who so wish can go down and do a short trekking with our guide to learn about the history of the ancient natives of the area, take pictures and reach a panoramic point to enjoy the beautiful scenery that surrounds them (subject to weather conditions).

At the end of the trip and on the way back we will have a panoramic view of the city of Ushuaia as well as the mountains and the magnificent nature that surrounds it.

DAY 2 Fuegian Lakes

Get ready to cross the mountain range. This excursion will take you through a variety of landscapes, always accompanied by the forest. Leaving Ushuaia, heading east, we will be able to see the complete plant of the Old Prison and we will pass through the industrial sector. When skirting the base of Mount Olivia, the imposing Sierra Alvear mountain range opens up towards the front, at the foot of which a gigantic peat valley stretches out; this is the Carbajal Valley, which later changes its name to Tierra Mayor and Las Cotorras.

When the route passes through Rancho Hambre, the actual ascent begins. At 430 m above sea level, at the Garibaldi Pass, we will enjoy an incomparable view of the Escondido and Fagnano Lakes. One of our stops will be at the imposing Mirador from where we will be able to appreciate the Escondido Lake. We will continue to Fagnano Lake, where we will have the next technical stop (in winter the arrival to Fagnano Lake is replaced by a visit to a winter centre).

Leaving from here, we will rejoin the National Route Nº 3 to start the journey through the sawmill area, where the lenga trees form a dense and even forest. On the way back to the city, we will stop at a restaurant along the route to enjoy lunch*.
